Treatment & Procedures
Carotid Antioplasty & Stenting
The doctor performing the procedure introduces a catheter into the femoral artery of the groin. The catheter is guided through the aorta and into the carotid artery under fluoroscopic control. (Figure A). Frequently a special ‘umbrella’ on a wire (distal-protection device or DPD) is first placed above the plaque to catch any debris or loose plaque that may become loose before it travels into the brain.
