Dr. Coplin is a St. Joseph Mercy Oakland vascular neurologist, Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurological Surgery at Wayne State University and Director of Neurotrauma and the Neurological Intensive Care Unit and Chief of Neurology at Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit, Mich. After earning his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, Dr. Coplin completed an internship in Internal Medicine, a residency in Neurology and fellowships in Critical Care Medicine and Neurosurgery at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Coplin’s primary areas of research interest include Neurointensive/Critical Care in cerebral metabolism and blood flow and concurrent cardiopulmonary disease associated with neurological catastrophes; Neurotrauma and care in cerebrovascular diseases such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

He has authored or co-authored more than 50 original articles, reviews and book chapters and has presented at numerous regional, national and international symposia during his career. Dr. Coplin serves on the editorial board for Neurocritical Care and is also a reviewer for several other journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Neurology and Stroke. He is a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, a founding member and serves on the board of directors for the Neurocritical Care Society, past chair of the Neurosciences section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and sits on the Program Planning Committee. He is on the executive committee and chairs the Critical Care and Emergency section of the American Academy of Neurology and sits on the executive committee of the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care.
